English Wikipedia

Wikipedia (IPA: /ˌwikiˈpiːdi.ə/ or /ˌwɪkiˈpiːdi.ə/) is a multilingual, web-based, free content encyclopedia project. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world. With rare exceptions, its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet, simply by clicking the edit this page link. The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Since its creation in 2001, Wikipedia has grown rapidly into one of the largest reference Web sites.

In every article, links will guide you to associated articles, often with additional information. Anyone is welcome to add information, cross-references or citations, as long as they do so within Wikipedia's editing policies and to an appropriate standard. One need not fear accidentally damaging Wikipedia when adding or improving information, as other editors are always around to advise or correct obvious errors, and Wikipedia's software, known as MediaWiki, is carefully designed to allow easy reversal of editorial mistakes.

Memory Alpha

Memory Alpha is a free Star Trek reference website that is being written collaboratively by the readers. Our goal is to become the largest, most reliable, and most up-to-date encyclopedia about everything related to the Star Trek universe.

Memory Alpha is a wiki, meaning that any fan may edit any article by clicking on the edit this page link that appears in every wiki article that is not designated as a protected page. This makes it very easy for any fan to share their knowledge and insight of the Star Trek universe and add to the collected information available.

The project was started in November 2003 by Harry Doddema and Dan Carlson. It was inspired by Wikipedia, a free, open-source encyclopedia, and by the interest of many Star Trek fans in a website that provides timely and useful reference information on the Star Trek universe. There are currently 25,320 articles that are being worked on.

Wikispecies - what and why?

Biologists who classify new species normally publish in specialized journals, which has led to an overwhelming amount of information with nobody keeping an overview. Even experts in very specialized fields often don't notice if a species has been formally recorded twice, three times or even more often. Therefore, it is not known how many species are known – and this is just as ridiculous as it sounds. We are not talking about all species that exist on earth - but simply the total number of species that have already been recorded in scientific publications.

Nobody knows how many there are. Expert 'A' might think that there are 17 000 annelids known, expert 'B' believes to know about 20 000. This is because there is no central registration process and no database or reference directory to browse information about the current state of knowledge on a particular species. This situation can be summarized with the statement: A central, extensive database for taxonomy is urgently needed.

The wiki of the One Laptop per Child is a facility consisting of various pages, many of which pages can be edited by everyone who visits the http://wiki.laptop.org webspace and some of which pages have been initiated by visitors to the webspace.

Some of the pages are write-protected so that they can only be edited by members of the management team of the One Laptop per Child project. These pages are apparent because instead of an edit tab on the page there is a view source tab.

The provenance of the write-protected pages is high. Provenance of the information in other pages of this wiki is often of high quality due to the good will of the contributors, yet its provenance cannot be guaranteed. Sometimes provenance is not an issue: for example, if someone provides a link to a code chart which is within the http://www.unicode.org webspace, though readers need to check that any description of such a document made in the wiki is correct.

In some contexts provenance is not an issue: for example, where a person is putting forward an idea which he or she wishes the management team to consider or where he or she is expressing opinions on which way to proceed. continue reading...

Marvel Database Project Wiki

The Marvel Database Project came online March 18th, 2005 as a non-profit site, with the goal of becoming the largest online database pertaining only to Marvel Comics. This site, aka the MDP, is the creation of Jamie Hari. MarvelDatabase.com uses the latest technology to present the information in a visually appealing and easy to navigate format. Thanks to the open source software, provided by the MediaWiki foundation, we are able to extend support of this reference to the Marvel Comics fanbase.

The Database was created initially from reference materials such as The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (aka OHMU) and various online sources. For a more complete list of references, although not exhaustive, see our Sources page.

Now that the Database is underway, the updates to our site are coming in from all sides. This often means a hard time when monitoring where this information comes from. We encourage users to list their references on the page containing the content they submitted. This unfortunately isn't always the easiest task. Also, we often get original material written by the user and hence may not have a specific reference.

We very much discourage plagiarism and if appropriately notified, will be more than glad to remove, update or appropriately credit the offending material.

This wiki is designed as a place where people interested in the history of fan fiction or the history of a specific fan fiction community can find a starting place to do that research. To this degree, the wiki is very useful. At the same time, this lack of usefulness is mitigated because, with a few exceptions, the information is rather scattershot and rarely integrates the articles to draw conclusions and explain how a fan fiction community or movement in the fan fiction community works. The reader has to sort through the available information and determine the relevancy on their own.

The wiki also suffers another problem. At the moment, it is the most comprehensive source on a panfannish level for information on fan fiction history. Looking at it, it might be easy to assume that it is comprehensive. It is not. One fanzine and one person do not make a fandom but that might be all that this wiki has on a subject because this wiki is truely panfannish. There are roughly 690 fandoms with some information about them.

It is for that reason that fanhistory.com actively wants people to contribute to information, timeline events in a community, explain an individual's place in the fan fiction community, try to integrate this information.

Started in August 2005 by Merovingian, the RuneScape Wiki's goal is to become a vast, knowledgeable source for all things RuneScape. The site being a wiki, anybody can edit to it, and all are encouraged to do so.

The RuneScape Wiki can be and aims to be a potential competitor against all major RuneScape fansites. Guides to new quests can be done under 3 hours, far ahead of other fansites. With more contributors, this goal can be easily achieved.

Wikis are often targets for vandalism because of the ability for it to be edited by anyone. However, the RuneScape Wiki is moderated by a number of administrators.
